Course Name: Advanced Diploma in Communication Design

Entry requirement(s):
Academic level: A relevant diploma from a recognized institute or equivalent
Language proficiency: IELTS 5.5 / GCE O Level (C6) / TOEFL (525/197) or pass internal English test

Learning outcome(s):
The aim of the Advanced Diploma in Communication Design is to delve into various technical and professional practices inline with the constantly evolving Visual Communication industry. The course covers Creative Writing, Print and Material, Packaging and Book Illustration. Students will also be updated with the latest trends and development in Brand Identity, Product Design and Advertising Campaign to get a more realistic and wholesome overview of the industry.

Module Synopses

Creative Writing
Design is no good without content. In this module, students will explore creative copywriting techniques to add more zing into their design. Catchy slogans, company mottos and juicy taglines are quintessential of a good logo or magazine cover. Learn how to turn boring content into interesting reading.

Print & Materials
This subject focuses on the crucial stages of offset production which follows after the design approval. It provides the basic and essential understanding for designers to ensure smooth production process and defined designer’s preproduction responsibility. It also gives you the opportunity to learn different production possibilities for final printing enhancement.

Packaging Forms & Graphics
This unit deconstructs the component parts of packaging design. It discusses structure, information layout, hierarchy, photography, illustration, finishes in isolation and in relation to each other.

  • Understand the role and purpose of packaging
  • Understand packaging dynamics and product differentiation

Book Illustration
Grids and format are often overlooked because of its almost exclusive utilitarian nature. This and the existence of many generic format is something that many designers do not realize they are thinking about. This unit includes the basic principles of layout as used in contemporary design.

  • Apply their knowledge of substrates and printing techniques to the book form
  • Understand Imposition and the various book formats
  • Understand the various grid system and how to apply them
  • Understand how to arrange information by Hierarchy and division
  • Understand and apply the different types of binding, slipcases and die cuts
  • Experiment with different types of folds, inserts, wraps, cuts and special requirements

Brand Identity
This subject is an introduction unit to designing brand identity. It discusses strategies undertaken to create brand awareness including traditional methods and emerging trends. It looks at how branding strategies are applied in advertising and how they can combine to affect customer experience. This unit aims to provide a practical structure for the brand building process without straying too far away from reality.

Product Design
This subject is an introduction unit to product design. It aims to equip students in idea generation, concept development, testing and manufacturing or implementation of a product (physical object or service). It discusses conceptualization and evaluation of ideas, making them tangible through products in a more systematic approach. This unit aims to combines art, science and technology to create tangible three-dimensional goods facilitated by digital tools.

Advertising Campaign

Media Planning
This unit deals with the non-creative side of advertising. A successful advertising campaign depends on a good media plan as well. Knowledge of the media planning is crucial for a designer in order to improve one’s workflow. The best media planners must also be strategic experts in advertising, marketing, research and finance.
