Course Name: Advanced Diploma in Interior Design
Duration: 12 months

Entry requirement(s):
Academic level: A relevant diploma from a recognized institute or equivalent
Language proficiency: IELTS 5.5 / GCE O Level (C6) / TOEFL (525/197) or pass internal English test

Learning outcome(s):
The objectives are to enhance and refine their talent and skill among the students in the area of designing arts and graphics software. Aside from that, they will learn the professional way to deal with prospective client and vendors to present the design proposal. Furthermore, the students will be taught to develop a business plan for establishing a design business.

Module Synopses

Exhibition & Events
This unit aims to expose students to the various type of exhibition booth set-up and through projects work, highlight to students the various issues to consider when designing for exhibition & events.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Design exhibition booth of various size & setup, from system to custom.
  • Manipulate & organized the different parts of system booth to create an interesting design
  • Combine system booth with customize carpentry to create an interesting design
  • Design various elements required in a corporate event / award presentation

Environment Factors
Environmental factors have always been an important consideration in designing, be it interior design or architecture. It had always been a restriction as well as a challenge. Different environmental factors require different building & construction method as well as different use of material and treatment. And over the past decade, “green” design or sustainable design has always been the “hot topic” for new building & design. In this unit, student will learn about how environment may affect their design solution & what is being a responsible designer.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Identify the criteria for “Green Mark” design
  • Know the various building method / material commonly used for “Sustainable” / “Green” design
  • Design with better responsibility and respect to the environment

Corporate Interior Design
Office design requires extensive understanding of the client’s corporate philosophy, image, working relationship between departments, work flow and details right down to individual’s department work area size. This unit exposes students to office space planning & requirements, understanding of office equipments requirements and also finishes detailing.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Identify & understand the functional aspect in different area of a corporate office
  • Learn & know some basic dimension within the office environment and furniture
  • Design using suitable materials & color, and propose suitable lightings

Building Construction & Services
This subject introduces the students to various aspect of building construction, services and their relationship to interior design and how they will affect interior designing. Topics covered included M&E, Plumbing, Fire Protection System, Building Automation, Acoustics & Climate Control etc. Students will also be exposed to basic building plans submission criteria.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Identify the various services that contribute to a functional building
  • Explain in basic each service’s function and how they work
  • Draft out a basic ceiling/services plan using various layering
  • Understand basic construction of buildings & structures

Residential Design
Designing a house or an apartment is one of the many specialize skills that an interior designer posses. But to be able to design a home, and not simply just renovating a house, a designer need to know the many important factors that will affect their design.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Identify & understand the functional aspect in different area of a house
  • Learn & know some basic dimension within the house and furniture
  • Design using suitable materials & colour, and propose suitable lightings

Construction & Specification Drawings
This unit aim to teach and expose students to the various common constructions details of furniture and building works and teaches students how to translate their ideas from 3D to 2D and written format.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Identify & understand construction of common furniture and building works
  • Learn & know some basic dimension, and specification
  • Able to produce a set of drawing to effectively communicate their design and specification

Retail Design
Retail design can range from designing a small boutique to overall planning of a mega mall. Either way, it is important to understand human flow, as well as how the client carries out their business activity. Student should learn to analyze and interpret the needs of the client and providing them with solution thru the student’s design.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Learn to identify and document the existing problems & scenario
  • Identify & understand the functional aspect in different area of a retail space
  • Learn & know some basic dimension within the retail environment and furniture
  • Design using suitable materials & colour, and propose suitable lightings and mood

Lighting, Mood & ID Details
A well designed interior, need to have good lighting design and planning. Without appropriate lighting, a well designed interior may lack the right mood & feel. It’ll be like a black & white photo of a beautiful flower. Therefore it is important for students to learn the different type of lighting available and their purpose and characteristic. It is equally important for the student to learn how to create the right mood and feel, and also about interior design details.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Propose the appropriate lighting effect to achieve the desired mood for their design
  • Able to recognize what type of lighting will gives a warm / cool effect and feel
  • Able to propose / design basic interior details
