This subject introduces students to cultural ideas and imageries corresponding to design as a problem based communication issue. Through the introduction of history and culture, students will develop an awareness and appreciation of culture and issues pertinent to design field and gain a broader understanding of how design affects and is affected by the culture of human society.
Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

- A wide range of graphics and relevant skills in acquiring knowledge and research.

Design Principles & Colour Theory
This subject is an introductory unit to design. It deals with topics such as basic design vocabulary, visual grammar and other basic elements of design that are important to create visual communication such as colour, shapes balance and unity.

Sketch Art
Drawings in design have always been an important form to express, share or present your ideas. The sketch art class targets to teach the students to draw for speed and expression.

- Understand basic Perspective Drawings.
- Able to draw storyboards.
Digital Photography
This subject introduces you to the fundamentals photography. It provides you with the necessary theoretical knowledge of the role of photographs in design and communication; and the practical skills required to apply the basic principles of photography in capturing image using a Digital SLR camera.

- Understand the principles of photography.
- Operate a Digital SLR Camera.
- Operate basic studio lighting.
- Harness techniques for various types of photography.

Design History
Form and space are the critical means of architecture that comprise a design vocabulary that is both elemental & timeless. The initial phase of any design process is the recognition of a problematic condition and the decision to find a solution to it. Thus, a designer must be able to recognize the basic elements of form and space and understand how they can be manipulated and organized in the development of a design concept, before addressing the more vital issue of meaning in interior design / architecture.

Typography & Layout
This subject takes a concise but thorough approach to introducing and examining the principles of typography. Students will explore a brief history of type and a survey of how type is classified. Students will learn about physical components of letters and rules of legibility, readability and style. They will also survey the creative use of emphasis, designing effective layouts, using grids and developing original type styles. This subject also delves into contemporary challenges in type while introducing terminology and concepts relevant to designing with type in a digital environment.

- Understand how choices in type can affect a reader’s ability to ‘receive’ information
- Support each idea and bring clarity to typographic concepts.
- Explain practical concerns based on working designers helping readers organize the information and make important connections.
- Analyse assignment/briefs and put key principles to work as they design their own visual projects.
Ideation
This subject introduces you to some idea generation, analysis and synthesis techniques within a problem-solving framework. Through these techniques, you will explore and develop fluidity of thought as well as an analytical mind. This subject introduces visual literacy where you develop your personal visual language to communicate a great variety of concepts. You will also develop and demonstrate your aesthetic awareness and design sensibility.

Marketing & Presentation Techniques
To provide an understanding of the principles of marketing in relation to design and technology, including the research, planning and presentation.

- Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and importance of marketing from the perspective of consumers.
- Analyze markets and identify appropriate segmentation criteria to discover promising market niches.
