Module Synopses

Creative Thinking & Sketch Art
This module explores the possibilities of creative thinking process, in this module students will be exposed to critical analysis and various factors that influence design and our daily lives. Sketching being the fundamentals of a designer, aims to explore and document the creative thinking process visually.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Understand and practice critical thinking
  • Understand human behavior and desires
  • Sketch effectively for communication
  • Document and process inspiration

Furniture & Detail Studies
This module explores notable furniture designs and designers from various periods of the design movement. Each student will be allocated with a designer to conduct researches and presentations for this module.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Understand the principles of furniture design and details
  • Ergonomic studies
  • History of furniture design
  • Furniture materials, fabrication process and finishes
  • Presentation and portfolio

Design History
Design History for Architecture & Interior Design teaches students architecture history, the different design style & influence of different period. From Egyptian Architecture, Art Nouveau, De Stijl, Art Decor, to High Tech, Post Modernism Deconstructivism to Digital Age. Student will also be introduced to iconic Architects of that period and studies of their work. This subject aims to bring student's understanding & appreciation of design & architecture to the next level, and thus improving their design sense for future design projects.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Identify different design style of the 20th Century
  • Have a basic understanding of architecture history
  • Identify a few iconic architects of the past century and their work

Design Principles and Methodology
This subject introduces you to the fundamentals design principles. It provides you with the necessary theoretical knowledge of the role of designers in ever-changing design industry; and the practical skills required to apply the basic principles of aesthetics, ergonomics, balance, composition and colours in an interior setting.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Understand the principles of design
  • The colour chart
  • Identifying various design styles and movements
  • Lighting and mood

2D & 3D Studies
Form and space are the critical means of architecture that comprise a design vocabulary that is both elemental & timeless. The initial phase of any design process is the recognition of a problematic condition and the decision to find a solution to it. Thus, a designer must be able to recognize the basic elements of form and space and understand how they can be manipulated and organized in the development of a design concept, before addressing the more vital issue of meaning in interior design / architecture.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Recognize the basic elements of form and space and understand how they can be manipulated and organized in the development of a design concept

Space, Design & Identity
Every design is unique; it is a representation of the individual designer's interpretation of the design brief & their site analysis. A design solution that works well in an urban environment may look out of place when put in a rural environment. Through project work, students will learn to analysis & interpret their chosen work site and to provide a design solution that speaks of that particular site, giving the design solution an identity of space.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Analyze a given project site and document their findings
  • Formulate their own design brief and proposed a suitable solution
  • Provide a unique design solution that speak of identity

3D Studio Max
3DS MAX Studies focuses on three-dimensional drawing functions of 3DS MAX that is designed for Interior Designers. The topics will provide the student an overview of 3DS MAX, various fundamental functions and its applications that can be applied to interior design. It describes the general principles and applications of 3DS MAX that are applicable to most of the programs. Its main objective is to familiarize the students with all the aspects of working with 3DS MAX.

Learning objectives - At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • To know the basic functions of 3D MAX and how they can be used in interior design.
  • To be able to create and edit objects and, import objects.
  • To be able to apply 3DS MAX materials editor and materials mapping,
  • To set 3DS MAX cameras and views, lightings and rendering.

AutoCAD Studies
AutoCAD Studies focuses on two-dimensional drawing functions of CADD that is designed for Interior Designers. The topics will provide the student an overview of AutoCAD, various fundamental functions and its applications that can be applied to interior design.
